The Story of the Konya

A 1970s Heritage Piece from Central Anatolia

Woven over 40 years ago in the historic city of Konya, this rug is a preserved narrative of Central Anatolian craftsmanship. During the 1970s, Konya weavers were celebrated for their mastery of the Mihrab (prayer niche) design, a geometric archway that symbolizes a focused, sacred space.

At the heart of this terracotta field stands the "Tree of Life"—an ancient motif representing growth, endurance, and the connection between earth and sky. The colors tell the true story of its age; the bold burnt orange has matured into a soft, earthy terracotta, while the slate blue accents have developed a gentle patina that only decades of natural light can produce.

Why it belongs in a modern interior: While its origins are ancient, its aesthetic is remarkably contemporary. The structured geometric borders and muted palette provide a grounded, organic soul to the "Amsterdam Loft" style. Whether placed on aged wood floors or set against the industrial lines of black-steel windows, this Konya rug offers a tactile history that mass-produced pieces simply cannot replicate.

Care Instructions

The Deep Clean: Every 2 to 5 years, have the rug professionally "wet-washed" by an Oriental rug specialist.

What to Avoid: Never steam clean or dry clean an Anatolian rug. The heat and chemicals will strip the natural oils from the wool, leaving it brittle and prone to shedding.
